A tennis tournament packing list needs to cover more than the first match. Pack your playing essentials, the backups you actually use and a small between-match kit. Then confirm how you will receive schedule updates, where to check in and what happens after your first result.
The useful distinction is between being ready to play and being ready to wait. This guide helps recreational competitors plan both, without turning a one-day event into an overnight packing exercise.

Start with the event, then the bag
Read your organiser's current instructions. Save the venue, check-in point, first match time and contact details somewhere you can reach quickly. Check whether the event supplies match balls, whether a warm-up court is available and how later match times are announced.
The USTA Colorado tournament-day guide explains that match times can shift and asks players to confirm their next match after reporting a result. Its suggested arrival time belongs to that guidance; use your own tournament's instructions for your booking.
Pack for two parts of the day
The playing kit
Set out your racquet, accepted court shoes, water bottle and court towel. Add the personal equipment you rely on. A spare racquet can be useful if a string breaks; decide on your backup plan before the event rather than at the court gate.
Keep small replacements together: an overgrip you use, your usual spare string if relevant, and other familiar accessories. The USTA's competition packing guide highlights equipment backups and a change of clothes. You do not need to copy every item on someone else's list.
The waiting kit
Choose a fresh top or socks, an appropriate layer and something you normally eat between sessions. For an outdoor event, add the sun protection you use. Check access to drinking water and food so that your plan suits the venue.
Decide where changed clothing will go on the journey home. A separate clothing pouch gives it a consistent place. Keep the belongings you need while waiting accessible, without mixing them into the equipment you want ready for the next match.
A three-moment match-day card
Copy these prompts into a note and fill in the details for your event. This is a planning template, not a tournament rule.
1. The evening before
- Event confirmed: venue, first match, check-in instruction and update channel.
- Equipment ready: racquet and backup plan, shoes, bottle, towel and familiar accessories.
- Waiting plan: change of clothing, layer and access to refreshments.
2. On arrival
- First stop: the organiser's check-in point.
- Current plan: confirm your court or the place to wait for an assignment.
- Belongings: ask where your bag should stay while you play and wait.
3. Before you leave after a match
- Result: report it as the organiser requires.
- Next step: confirm whether you play again, where and how you will hear the time.
- Kit reset: replace what you used and put the playing kit back in its usual places.
Choose a bag around your actual competition routine
If you keep your belongings with you throughout the day, practise finding the next item without emptying the bag. If the venue offers separate storage, decide which belongings stay there and which travel courtside. Check the venue's arrangements before relying on either plan.
The Westmount Tennis Weekender brings dedicated storage to a considered court-day tote. Its custom exterior pocket is designed for up to two racquets. A separate side shoe compartment, secure back zipper pocket and detachable, adjustable crossbody strap help you give footwear, small essentials and carrying their own roles.

Use our tennis bag size guide to compare your own kit with the published measurements. The pocket-by-pocket organisation guide helps you decide where each item belongs. For a trip that includes accommodation, use the separate tennis weekend planning list.
A match day feels more composed when the next step is clear. Prepare the event details as carefully as the equipment, then choose the bag that supports your routine. Explore the Westmount.
